Direct Mac distribution has more moving parts than a static download link. The DMG needs to be signed, notarized, uploaded, described in the release system and advertised through Sparkle appcast metadata.
The simplest safe product flow is draft first, then validate, then publish. Once published, the website download page, homepage button, release notes page and appcast endpoint can all read the same stable release data.
